Speak Up For Animals has been working with the Swampscott DPW on a fix to keep ducklings from being swept away by the current at Foster's Pond. Last June, Karen Barbuzzi, who lives nearby, alerted me to the plight of seven ducklings stuck in a catch basin there. Unfortunately, we saved only four; the other three went through the underground pipes and got lost in heavy brush behind houses on the opposite side of the road. Swampscott's firefighters tried to get them, but it wasn't possible. We can only hope their mom somehow heard their peeping and found them.
To prevent similar scenarios in the future, Speak Up For Animals suggested and bought some low fencing that would allow water flow, but keep ducklings safe. A little brainstorming with all-around nice guys, DPW Director Gino Cresta and Foster Pond officianado John Picariello, allowed the idea to advance. And, thanks to DPW staff members Evan Segal, Cory Pasquarelli (too shy to be in the pic), and Steve Kent, who all gladly and carefully did the installation, we have real protection for ducklings and any other critter who's too little to withstand a strong current. Thank you, too, to Toni Bandrowicz who suggested that the fence be temporary, up for just the typical two months in spring when hatchings occur, so collection of debris is minimized. And, to Wayne Spritz, for his engineering advice.
