This Fiddler Plays Many A Tune

POPS Seniors in the Arts

Whether by song or violin, Dea Hoxha enjoys a range of music. The Swampscott High senior has played violin for 10 years, and has been a member of the high school’s chorus and North Shore Voices for the past four. This year she is bringing her musical background to the stage as a cast member of the SHS drama club’s presentation of “Pippin.”

As a violinist, Hoxha has devoted her Saturdays to playing in the New England Conservatory’s Youth Symphony Orchestra in Boston, part of the preparatory program. She will be joining the group on a tour in Ireland this summer.

Hoxha began singing in the chorus at Clarke Elementary and continued through middle school and into high school. North Shore Voices, an audition group at the high school, has allowed the alto to work on a few more pieces in a smaller setting. She enjoys listening to pieces she knows from chorus and jazz.

“My taste is all over the place,” said Hoxha. “I really like the wide variety of pieces that we do, experimenting with a cappella and jazz, and the more choral traditional pieces. This year, ‘Go Down Moses’ was really fun to sing.”

Hoxha auditioned for and was accepted into the Districts as a violinist this year, making it to the All State level. The group, made up of top high school musicians, had two nights to rehearse in Boston before a concert in symphony on March 21.

“It was nice meeting people from all over the state,” she said. “We played two pieces that had different movements. The conductor was really good.”

The daughter of Nezi and Kujtim Hoxha, Dea hopes to join an orchestra next year, while she is attending the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. And it is likely that she will keep singing too.

“I just realized now much I am going to miss chorus,” she said. “ I really appreciate the effort that Mr. Pearse (SHS Music teacher) puts into everything.
