Five Things You Need To Know Today: April 30

Beginning 9 pm Monday, April 30, through 1 am Tuesday, May 1, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will perform nightly bridge work on the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line on the Saugus River drawbridge.

 

1) Newsbit of the Day: Beginning 9 pm Monday, April 30, through 1 am Tuesday, May 1, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will perform nightly bridge work on the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line on the Saugus River drawbridge. The bridge work, which is necessary for safe, reliable service, has been scheduled on at night to minimize the impact to customers.

Bridge work will affect select trains ONLY on the Newburyport/Rockport line for one night. During this time, a replacement bus service will be in place between North Station, Chelsea and Lynn.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are anticipated for customers traveling on the following trains:

Inbound

  • Train 186 (9:00pm departure from Newburyport) 
  • Train 142 (10:45pm departure from Rockport) 

Outbound

  • Train 189 (9:35pm departure from North Station) 
  • Train 143 (10:40pm departure from North Station) 
  • Train 145 (12:10am departure from North Station)

 

2) Swampscott Scholars:  inducted 29 National Honor Society members on March 13. The society honors students for excellence in four areas: scholarship, leadership, service and character. One of the 29 students was Rebecca Fine. 

3) Swampscott Athletics: The Swampscott High School's Harry Potter Alliance chapter will be sponsoring their second-annual Quidditch Tournament/Hunger Games on Wednesday, May 2nd at Lower Jackson field from 12 - 6 pm. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Oxfam - a non-profit global hunger and food sustainability awareness organization.

It will be $2 per person for Quidditch players and $10 for a team of 7. Participants in the Hunger Games will need to be sponsored - having family, friends, co-workers, teachers, etc. pledge money.  

There will be prizes for the winners and individual with the most sponsors. Registration and questions will be done through our email address, swampscotthpachapter@gmail.com
No equipment or experience is necessary — we have workshops and teachers on-hand and will explain all rules before the events begin. Concessions will be sold.

4) Weather Watch:  The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny day with a high temperature of 57.
