Katie Phelan Bids For Swampscott Select Board Seat

SWAMPSCOTT, MA —Katie Phelan is vying for a seat on the Swampscott Select Board with a campaign focused on preserving the open spaces of the town and putting the town in the best financial position to be able to acquire more open space when the opportunity arises.

"If the pandemic taught us anything, open space was where the community thrived — it became a sacred space for many people: parents, kids, seniors," Phelan said. "Not only does Swampscott need more of these open spaces but we need to push ourselves to preserve and protect the spaces that we do have.

"Open space is a commodity in town and we need to continue to keep those spaces a top priority."

Phelan is also involved with the schools as the co-Chair of the Hadley School PTO Fundraising Committee.

"Investing in my kids and my community has always been a passion and I am glad to be able to make it a priority," she said.

Phelan said her other key issue is bettering public education. Her husband is a teacher in the Lynn Public Schools and she is the mother of a Hadley kindergartner. She said that gives her an understanding of the importance of a conducive environment so that all students can be in the best space for learning, physically and mentally.

She was a political science major in college when she worked on the First in the Nation primary in New Hampshire and went on to earn a law degree at the New England School of Law.

She has spent the past 12 years as an attorney and in-house counsel.
