Keying In to Music

Swampscott's Seniors in the Arts focuses on Nick Bishop.

Growing up with a strong focus on math and computers, Nick Bishop did not consider exploring music until high school, after his interest was piqued during a middle school music unit on basic piano.

“I had a lot of fun figuring out the note to songs,” said the Swampscott High senior. He decided to explore piano further by taking piano lab as a freshman.

Bishop’s interest in piano and music has blossomed over the course of his high school career; he has taken three years of piano lab, one year of chorus and one year of AP music theory.

The son of Katy and Bernard Bishop, Nick has discovered that he has a strong interest in analyzing music.

“One of the things I like to do is to look at melodies to songs I like and try to recreate them by ear, “ he said. His Swampscott High music classes also have allowed him to delve into the intricacies of musical details beyond the basic notes in piano lab and to figure out chords in AP Music Theory. He has rounded out his musical background by taking a year of chorus.

“I like singing, but never considered taking it in school,” he said. “After doing sight singing, I decided to try it, and it has been a lot of fun.”

The exploration of music has opened up a whole new area of interest, Bishop said.

Next year, he hopes to study math or computer engineering in college, but he will be bringing his keyboard with him.

“I am definitely going to keep playing piano,” he said. “There is lots of room to improve and learn more pieces.”
