Nutrition Month - Perspective of Advance Physical Therapy & Sport Rehab in Lynn

March is National Nutrition Month, an annual nutrition education campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign encourages healthy eating styles, and focuses on making informed food choices and developing sound physical activity habits.  What better time to highlight the importance of sound nutrition practices?

While important to people of all ages, nutrition is vital to seniors. A sound diet will help seniors in reducing the risk of common conditions or illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis and even certain cancers. Eating properly helps provide older people with greater resistance to disease, higher energy levels, faster recovery times and a sharper mind. One should not underestimate the significance of good nutrition for people over the age of 65. It is a key determinant of their health.

At our physical therapy practice in Lynn, we treat patients of all ages for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. There are some seniors among our patients. As physical therapists, we have a good perspective when it comes to the seniors’ nutrition habits and health. By the very nature of their work, physical therapists regularly take stock of a patient’s health status to develop individualized wellness plans or exercise regimens to maintain mobility, flexibility, strength and overall good health. Many common health problems such as obesity and cardiovascular issues are in fact the result of diet imbalance and poor nutrition.            .

Our work providing physical therapy services provides us with a unique vantage point.  It is with this “front line “perspective that we can guide older patients into sound physical activity habits and good nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle. During the month of March (and all year long!) please make sure the nutrition habits of older family members and friends are sound. And don’t ignore yours in the process!
