Planning Board Candidate Profile: William (Bill) Quinn

Swampscott Planning Board candidate

I am a candidate for the open seat on the Swampscott Planning Board. I was born and raised in Swampscott and currently live in town with my wife and two daughters. I have over thirty years of engineering experience in medical devices and residential appliances, both of which are heavily regulated industries. The skills that I have garnered and utilize daily to decipher FDA guidelines and government standards will serve me well as a board member, as will my ability to interpret complex technical drawings and detailed plans. Engineers are also tasked with peeking into the future to help guide progress through innovative thinking, concept development, and problem solving. Finally, I have a strong emotional attachment to the town and its residents and want to make Swampscott thrive as a desirable community to live in and visit for many years to come.

The town is going through a paradigm shift in governance where input from residents is being more actively solicited and heard by the town leaders. This wave of momentum has inspired me to become a more active participant in identification, discussion, and resolution of the many planning related issues facing the town. Among the high priorities would be to encourage new businesses within town. Making Swampscott more attractive for visitors that currently go to neighboring towns for their dining, shopping and recreational needs would allow for the provision of additional amenities to residents as well as increasing the commercial tax base, creating jobs in town, and encouraging visitors to spend their money in our town. Moderating residential development, upgrading schools and recreational facilities, dispositioning of surplus town property, and providing residents with a voice are imperative.
