Swampscott Car Break-In Suspect Caught In The Act: Police

A 34-year-old homeless man who will be charged in the rash of car break-ins was found rummaging through a vehicle, police said.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Police made an arrest early Thursday morning in a spree of car break-ins. Alexis Fuentes Vega, 34, who is homeless, is charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony and receiving stolen property. Vega will also be charged in past break-ins around town, numbering as high as about 20 over the past couple weeks, Sgt. Tim Cassidy said.

Vega was arrested around 2:30 a.m. after police driving down Salem Street near the Tedesco Golf Course saw a car open with a bike laying next to it. Detectives, who were in an unmarked vehicle, got out and saw Vega rummaging through the car, Cassidy said.

Police said they were turned on to Vega after finding a cell phone with his information on it in a car that was broken into on Fairview Ave. They also recently got video footage of a suspect, believed to be Vega, on a mountain bike with a red backpack looking into parked motor vehicles in the Pine Street area.
