Swampscott Mourns Death Of Police Officer Thomas Lucas

Swampscott police said Lucas died Thursday morning after a courageous battle with cancer.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — A Swampscott police officer is being remembered for his dedication to community policing and his relentless positivity on Thursday after Officer Thomas Lucas died following a battle with cancer earlier in the day.

Swampscott police announced the passing "with a heavy heart" in praising Lucas as an officer who "touched the lives of so many near and far."

"He will be remembered for his overwhelmingly positive personality and his ability to bring a smile to all wherever he was," the statement said.

Lucas joined the department in October of 2002.

"The Brothers and Sisters of the Swampscott Police Department send our deepest condolences to Tom's family and friends," the department said. "Please take a moment to remember the life of Officer Thomas Lucas and send positive thoughts to his family.

"We will deeply miss you, Tom. Rest easy. We'll take it from here."

The Marblehead Police Department sent its condolences to the Lucas family and the members of the Swampscott Police Department.

"This is a great loss to law enforcement on the North Shore, all of us who have known Tom throughout the years and the Swampscott community as a whole," Marblehead police posted on social media. "Always a smile on his face, always a positive attitude, and whenever you saw him you were better for it.

"That's the type of guy Tom was."
