Swampscott Music Teacher Dies Of Flu Complications

Phyllis Gotlib, a longtime music teacher in Swampscott, fell 'unexpectedly ill over the weekend,' the school superintendent said.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — A longtime Swampscott music teacher died Wednesday because of complications from the flu, according to school district officials. Phyllis Gotlib, 68, fell "unexpectedly ill over the weekend," Swampscott Superintendent Pamela Angelakis wrote in a letter.

Gotlib had been a fixture in the school system since 1999.

“She has touched the lives of hundreds of staff and thousands of students,” Angelakis wrote.

Classes are canceled Friday at the Clarke, Stanley, Hadley Elementary schools to allow for people to make the funeral.
