Swampscott XC Takes On Winthrop & Danvers

The Big Blue cross-country teams began the NEC Small portion of their season on Wednesday with a tri-meet against the Winthrop Vikings and Danvers Falcons on Deer Island in Winthrop, Massachusetts. With a picturesque fall day and beautiful setting, the Big Blue emerged with three out of a possible four victories on the day.

Sophomore Isabella Kornitsky continued to lead the Big Blue, placing second against Winthrop and Danvers with a time of 18:15 (3rd overall) on the 2.67 mile course, despite a slight wrong turn. Junior Alyssa Mauriello (5th overall, 18:37) continued to run solid times while sophomore Vivien Gere ran a breakout race to finish 9th overall (19:36). The first year duo of Veronica Rizzo (11th overall, 19:46) and Charlotte Westhoven (19:49) rounded out the scoring for Swampscott while Megan Mahoney (19:56) and Michelle Laconte (20:08) displaced for the Big Blue. The girls defeated Winthrop 25-32 but fell to Danvers, 25-30. The girls are now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEC Small.

For the boys, senior Matt Mahoney cruised out front, finishing first overall with a time of 14:16. Junior Bennett Smith (4th overall, 15:13) and senior Marco Scibelli (5th overall, 15:22) finished close together to help keep a Swampscott victory alive. Junior Robert McLaughlin (7th overall, 15:36) and senior Noah Conti (10th overall, 16:03) finished the scoring and kept the spread between the second and five runners close. Emery Green (12th overall, 17:03) and Ethan Smith (18th overall, 18:17) displaced runners. The Big Blue defeated Winthrop 15-20 and snuck by the Falcons with a score of 27-28. The boys currently stand at 3-0 overall with a record of 2-0 in the NEC Small.

Both teams travel to Salem next week on Tuesday, September 24th for an NEC cross-over meet. The meet starts at 4PM.
