Swampscott's Cole Hamernick Earns MIAA Agganis Scholarship
The three-sport standout was chosen as the state's 2022 Boys Student-Athlete of the Year.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Swampscott High senior Cole Hamernick capped his celebrated high school career with one of the state's top sports honors as he was named the recipient of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Harry Agganis Boys Student-Athlete of the Year Scholarship.
Hamernick earned the award by excelling in football, lacrosse and indoor track, as well as his efforts to volunteer as math assistant and special needs soccer coach.
Hamernick was a senior captain and key member of the Big Blue team that defeated North Reading for the first statewide Division 5 championship at Gillette Stadium in December.

The MIAA described him as "a leader, someone who has a unique ability to unite his peers no matter the situation."
Beyond competing on the field for Swampscott High, he was also an Algebra 2 math teacher assistant and volunteered for a soccer program for special needs children.

"Cole represents all of the values that we hope to instill in a Swampscott High School student," Swampscott principal Dennis Kohut said. "He has served four years as a leader and as a tremendous role model for our younger students."
Hamernick will attend the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. this fall.
Ijeoma Ezechukwu of Ayer Shirley Regional High School earned the girls scholarship.
"I want to congratulate Ijeoma Ezechukwu of Ayer Shirley Regional High School and Cole Hamernick of Swampscott High School for being selected to receive the Harry Agganis Student-Athlete of the Year scholarship for 2022," said Greg Agganis, great-nephew of former Massachusetts star athlete Harry Agganis. "Both were top honor students and made significant contributions to their respective communities.
"I am honored to announce that both Ijeoma and Cole possess great character, leadership and dignity."
Hamernick was presented his scholarship during the recent during the Swampscott High School Senior Awards Night.
