Van Dam Resigns from Recreation Commission

The selectman wanted Swampscott's Got Talent to be an annual event.

Vice Chairman David Van Dam resigned from the Recreation Commission Wednesday night, citing the commission's decision to hold the Swampscott's Got Talent event every other year.

As a selectman, Van Dam served as a liaison member of the commission and cannot vote. He strongly opposed the decision not to hold the Talent event this winter.

"Last year, they didn't want to do it and we made them," he said. The event made thousands of dollars, which was used to support other recreation programs, he said.

"My time is better spent elsewhere," Van Dam said.

Chairman Rich Malagrifa, who danced in the amateur talent contest last year, agreed.

He said he would switch with Van Dam on their assignments.

He will become the liaison with the recreation commission and assign Van Dam to serve as a liaison with the Board of Health.
