VIDEO: Big (Blond) Eyes Big Game Against Bedford

That's not the Swedish national team on the ice.

It's your Big Blue crew.

And they are still playing hockey as the high school Div. 3 tournament field has winnowed to eight teams.

The Swampscott players went blond after the season ended, something they did last year before the tournament, said Swampscott Coach Gino Faia.

The players also watched the movie Miracle at senior Trevor Massey's house, the coach said. The 2004 movie tells the story of the 1980 US Olympic Mens' ice hockey team's improbable win against the Soviets.

The Big Blue are on a roll of their own. An exciting journey through the high school hockey tourney.

Swampscott lost twice to Marblehead during the regular season but turned the tables on the Magicians Wednesday in Chelmsford, winning 4-1.

"Total excitement for the seniors and other guys to finally beat Marblehead in a tournament game and for keeping a record breaking season alive," said the Swampscott coach, describing his thoughts about the win.

Next comes the Div. 3 North Sectional finals on Saturday vs. Bedford, at 4:30 p.m. in Stoneham.

Bedford, 9-8-3, the No. 9 seed, advanced to the finals by defeating Shawsheen, 3-1.

Bedford made it to the semi-finals by ousting the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Lowell, in a shoot-out (4-3).

Swampscott, 17-5, the No. 3 seed, made it to the semi-finals with a 10-1 defeat of St. Joseph Prep.

Then they made it to the finals with a dramatic goal by Corey Carmody in the final minutes of the third period against Marblehead.

It was a goal followed by two open netters, giving the estimated 250 Swampscott fans — including about 100 students — reason to jump and shout.

Saturday two determined teams will meet.

"Bedford will be a tough team, we will need to have the same focus and intensity as we had vs Marblehead," said the Swampscott coach.

They will also likely have the same color hair they had against Marblehead.
