Adult Events (Virtual)

VIRTUAL: Great American Songbook (*RR)

Monday, August 24, 2pm

The Great American Songbook, also known as "American Standards," is the canon of the most important and influential American songs from the early and mid-20th century. They include the most popular and enduring melodies from the 1910s to the 1950s that were created primarily for Broadway musical productions and Hollywood musical films. In Part #1 of this series, songs composed and recorded prior to 1930 will be the focus, including such great numbers as Irving Berlin's "Always," Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust," James Monaco's "You Made Me Love You" and George Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me." Watch and listen to vocalists and arrangers both past and present interpret these timeless melodies and examine how their placement within the context of a musical show or film added to their historical significance and made them truly unforgettable. Led by Rich Knox, a retired school teacher and administrator, who lectures on musicals, films, and opera to libraries across the country.

VIRTUAL: Gun Control, The Second Amendment & School Shootings (*RR)

Monday, August 24, 7pm

Examine the deadlock in this country over gun control and the Second Amendment within the context of the school shootings. He is also a fiction writer, who has recently published Bullet Holes, a novel about the human cost of school shootings.

VIRTUAL: Celebrating 250 -- Revolutionary Sites & Remnants Of Colonial New York City (*RR)

Tuesday, August 25, 2pm

Famous for being the "latest and the greatest," New York City isn't known for preserving sites from the 18th century. That doesn't mean they don't exist. Using historical documents, maps, and illustrations, as well as contemporary photos, virtually visit the hilltop of today's Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn — the site of the first battle of the American Revolution, after the signing of the Declaration of Independence; a colonial-era fence; the church visited after George Washington's inauguration; the oldest home in Manhattan, and much more. Led by Ginny Poleman, owner of New York City Encounters. A graduate of Cornell University, Poleman is a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, a trained docent for the Municipal Art Society, and a trained educational guide at Manhattan's largest art museum.

Kerman is the author of eight books, including The Duke: Weekly Conversations with the Last Honest Politician. He is currently the humor columnist for The Eagle Tribune, where he writes the popular weekly column, "World According to Scott." VIRTUAL: JOB SEARCH HELP -- How To Use AI In Your Job Search (*RR)

Wednesday, August 26, 9:30am

Job seekers are using AI more than ever, and most of it is making things harder, not easier. In this session, recruiter Kelli Hrivnak breaks down exactly where AI genuinely helps in a job search and where it backfires, from sharpening a resume to turning an existing LinkedIn network into a real outreach list. You'll see a live demo of the "cultivate list" method, sorting connections and drafting personalized outreach at scale, the kind of tactic recruiters use, not generic AI tips. Expect practical, tested advice from someone who reads hundreds of AI-assisted applications a week. Led by Kelli Hrivnak, the founder of Knak Digital, a boutique recruitment firm that specializes in identifying and matching technology, digital marketing, and creative talent with hyper-growth businesses. Kelli is a leader with over 15 years of experience in staffing and recruitment services. Throughout her career, she has partnered with a large variety of companies, from Fortune 500 corporations to start-ups. VIRTUAL: Celebrating 250 -- Genealogy & The Importance of Revolutionary War Pensions (*RR)

Wednesday, August 26, 7pm

Over the past decade, genealogist and historian Kassidy Cobb, founder of History for the Ages, has been discovering her Patriot ancestors' unique stories. By researching Revolutionary War pension applications, she was able to determine where her ancestors enlisted and fought at, their personal effects, and even information about their family. Kassidy will discuss how to locate these pensions, plus how to use the information provided therein to build upon your ancestor's story. These pension files can absolutely enrich the narrative surrounding these brave American Patriots, which is why it's important to access, transcribe, and interpret them!

VIRTUAL: The Art Of Wild Weather (*RR)

Thursday, August 27, 7pm

Explore the raw power and sublime terror of nature's most dramatic moments through the eyes of artists who dared to capture lightning, tornadoes, floods, and tempests on canvas, from Turner's legendary storm at sea to Curry's iconic Kansas tornado. These masterworks reveal how painters throughout history have transformed meteorological chaos into profound artistic statements about humanity's fragile relationship with the natural world, whether through Hokusai's towering wave, or contemporary artists responding to our climate crisis. How do these artists manage to make us feel the wind's roar, the lightning's flash, and the earth's trembling through mere pigment and brushstrokes? Learn how wild weather has always served as both artistic inspiration and metaphor for life's most turbulent and transformative moments. Led by art historian Jane Oneail, founder of Culturally Curious.

VIRTUAL: The Legacy of Mickey Mantle -- A Legend (and Victim) of American Culture (*RR)

Friday, August 28, 2pm

What made Mickey Mantle, "The Mick?" What inspired the reverence of millions of fans? In retirement, how did his popularity grow even as his reputation sank? Why, long after his death, is Mantle memorabilia more coveted than ever? No one is better equipped to answer these questions than Rob Weir, a PhD in American social history, retired UMass Amherst Professor, and a Mantle idolizer since the age of five. In his new book, 7 Swings at 7, Dr. Weir combines scholarly research with the powerful emotions of a fan to illuminate the "Mantle Mystique" in a way no one has before.
