Dewing School Recently Celebrated Dr. Seuss' Birthday

The Dewing School recently celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by hosting guest readers in each of our classrooms. The National Education Association annually sponsors Read Across America for Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The program focuses on motivating children to read, in addition to helping them master basic skills. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

As part of the school’s celebration this year, the entire school, both students and staff, participated in a 20-minute DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time on March 2. After reading “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” students and staff joined together in the halls all around the Dewing to read books together. Students enjoyed a visit from the Cat in the Hat!

This year, Dewing School readers were student leaders and athletes from Tewksbury Memorial High School, many of whom went to the Dewing School as elementary students. The Dewing School administration was pleased to welcome students to the Dewing School as our guest readers. Our primary reading activity this year is for children to complete a reading challenge by reading 3,000 books in just two weeks. Dewing students have risen to that challenge and read more than 3,100 books so far!

The Dewing School focuses on literacy activities every day to ensure that all of our students become successful and competent readers. In March, however, the school plans specific activities to get our students reading even more. The school’s planning committee included the following teachers and administrators: Robyn Hakala, Special Education; Liz Robinson, Reading Specialist; Beth Krzesinski, Second Grade; Sarah Yore, Second Grade; Shelley Wrobel, Second Grade; Kelly Scialdone, First Grade; andJan Fuller, Assistant Principal.
