Dracut Man Arrested in Market Basket Robbery

Suspect allegedly threatened to shoot young female cashier.

The man who allegedly threatened to shoot a young cashier, while robbing the on Monday was on the lam for less than 24 hours before being tracked down and arrested by .

Jason Capua, 30, of 931 Methuen St., Apt 2, Dracut, is charged with armed robbery, larceny over $250, and assault with a dangerous weapon. 

According to information provided by , Capua walked into Market Basket at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday. At some point, he approached a cashier and implied that he had a gun. Capua allegedly told the girl that he would shoot her if she didn’t hand over money to him.

Capua then allegedly fled the scene with more than $250 in cash.

Every available officer, including Sheehan, himself, responded to the scene, but were not able to immediately locate the suspect. Lowell Police sent a unit to the scene to help and later sent a K-9 unit to help with the search. Billerica also sent a K-9 unit and Wilmington Police provided coverage in South Tewksbury.

According to Sheehan, excellent surveillance footage provided by Market Basket along with the unauthorized use of a credit card by Capua assisted detectives with the identification process. 

Tuesday, at 4 p.m.,  Tewksbury Police detectives, along with the assistance of the Dracut Police, converged on 931 Methuen St., Apt 2, in Dracut. Detectives had reliable information that Capua was staying at the apartment, which was rented in the name of his girlfriend, said Sheehan.

According to Sheehan, Capua initially refused to exit the residence. However, detectives were able to talk to Capua on the phone and convinced him to exit. He was placed into custody without incident.     

Evidence, including clothing and U.S. currency believed to be connected to the robbery, was recovered at the apartment.

Capua was arraigned Wednesday in Lowell District Court.
