Foul End to Strong Season for Lady Redmen Basketball

A late intentional foul call hurt Tewksbury's chances of completing a comeback, and the locals were eliminated with a 38-34 loss.

It was a strong season for the Tewksbury High School girls basketball team. But it was a foul end for the Redmen on Wednesday night in North Andover.

A controversial intentional foul call late in the North Division 2 first round game prevented Tewksbury from making one final attempt to get back in the game and helped the Scarlet Knights escape with a 38-34 win.

After Tewksbury couldn't capitalize on several possessions trailing by one point, the Redmen were forced to foul with about 15 seconds remaining.

When a defender fouled in hopes of getting the ball back down by at worst three points, the referee instead ruled that the foul came with no intent at going for the ball. As a result, North Andover received two free throws, the ball back and was able to seal the win.

With the loss, Tewksbury ended its campaign at 10-10. The Redmen lose four seniors, but have a strong core of players eligible to return next year.

"I'm so proud of my girls with how they played. It's just sad that the way they played, I feel for them right now because they spilled their guts," said Tewksbury head coach Mark Bradley. "To see it end like that, it's a shame... This one's going to hurt for a while."
