Billerica - 4
The Tewksbury BU10-3 team travelled to Billerica this past Saturday and had an outstanding game despite the heat. Nicholas Biron started in net, and had the help of Arya Mehrabani and Sean Cunningham, who applied a lot of pressure to the Billerica forwards. The game started out quickly for Noah Fleming who out dribbled and outsmarted the defense for the first goal of the game. Next the forward line of Liam Cafferty, Joey Branchaud and Liam Flynn connected for the 2nd goal. Billerica regrouped quickly and they were relentless on the Tewksbury defense. Billerica had some well executed shots on Nick Biron, and he put his best effort forth but they made it past him, to tie the game at 2-2. Near the end of the first half, Thomas Barinelli was on fire! This was probably one of his best games, as he went on to score the next 2 goals, which would be the first of his total of 4 goals scored this game. Billerica was stunned initially but they tied the game up at 4-4 with minutes to go in the half, but there was Joey Branchaud with some quick feet and he outsmarted the keeper to take a 5-4 lead at halftime.
At the start of the second half the heat was starting to make a difference for both teams. Liam Cafferty started in net. The next goal was scored within minutes by Liam Flynn, his 2nd goal of the day, which was well set up by Noah Fleming for the assist. Billerica put forth a valiant effort but this was Thomas Barinelli’s day to shine with his 3rd goal with the help of Joey Branchaud. Who would both go on to score the 8th goal by Joey-which was assisted by Nicholas Biron and the 9th by Thomas. Needless to say, Billerica was stunned by the quick thinking of this Tewksbury squad. The forward line was instrumental in getting the passes to one another. The defense put a lot of pressure on the Billerica forwards and really forced the ball to the outside. Even though it was a high scoring game credit needs to be given to Billerica, they played hard right to the end and did not give up. Well done Tewksbury BU10-3 team!!!!

Wilmington BU14-2 – 1
Tewksbury BU14-1 won its fifth game of the season this past Saturday 2-1 over rival Wilmington. The first half saw a very evenly played game with both sides trying to penetrate through the defensive lines. After 17 minutes, Tewksbury striker Dario Riparo found the back of the net with his well placed shot to the Wilmington keeper’s left side. Tewksbury was playing hard but was unable to convert anymore chances. With 7 minutes left in the 1st half Wilmington scored on a misplayed ball in front of the Tewksbury net. The first half ended with a 1-1 tie.
The second half started and Tewksbury came out better organized and playing a little more aggressive soccer than in the first half. Wilmington also came out stronger, but the majority of the play was in the Wilmington side of the field. The referee missed various fouls for both teams. Tewksbury midfielder Tyler Sar was tripped well into the penalty area and the referee called it a direct free kick from outside the box. With time running out both teams were getting eager to find a way to break the deadlock. Thirty-one minutes into the second half, Anthony Barinelli collected a pass from Josh Cabral and dribbled the ball up the left side and blasted a shot that the Wilmington keeper still managed to place a hand on it but couldn’t keep it out of the net.
Overall this wasn’t Tewksbury BU14-1 best performance, however their determination and conviction to come out on top was evident during the second half. Congratulations to them for their hard fought victory. Next game for Tewksbury is still unknown, as they have two very important make up games away still to be played. The next scheduled game is June 4th against Billerica at Frasca Field in Tewksbury at 9:00AM.

Burlington 2
The Tewksbury Girls U10 Division 3A team pulled out a hard fought win in their last home game of the season. Their opponent Burlington came in hoping to avenge an earlier loss and came out in the first half with lots of energy. The Tewksbury defense of Jordan Paula, Meaghan Welch, Grace Morris, Olivia Houghton, and Mackenzie Kennison were able to repel the Burlington attack for most of the half and get the ball out to the offense. Sarah Cunningham and Kendall Donahoe were working hard on the offensive side to put pressure on Burlington. At halftime, Burlington led 1-0 although the Tewksbury girls controlled the tempo. Because of this the coaches were optimistic about their chances in the 2nd half.
The 2nd half was the same as the 1st as Tewksbury was able to control the tempo but Burlington was able to put their 2nd ball in the net for a 2-0 lead. The situation was concerning as this Tewksbury team was looking at their 1st loss in a year. Coaches then made a switch putting Kendall in net for the 1st time all season and bringing Marissa Ladderbush out to play center. This seemed to energize the team and a short time later (about 8 minutes in) Jordon Paula was able to score her 1st goal of the season off a beautiful corner kick by Olivia to make it 2-1. Then it was Marissa’s turn. Dealing with the frustration of letting up the 2 goals and showing incredible determination and focus, Marissa was able to put in 3 goals in a 10 minute span for the final score. Defensively Jordan and Meaghan were able to turn away almost all Burlington attacks and if not than Kendall was there to scoop up the ball including one diving stop. Many others had scoring chances in the waning moments of the game including Sarah, Kenzie, and Grace. Overall the team showed incredible heart by coming back from a two goal deficit and notching the all important win in a tight division. Coming up are showdowns against Chelmsford and Billerica that will probably determine 1st place. Go Tornados!!
Tewksbury GU10-5Tewksbury – 2
Charlestown – 0
Tewksbury travelled down to the ‘Town for their first game ever on a turf field. Tewksbury was shorthanded but full of energy as they warmed up. The first half was exciting as the ball skipped and bounced on the turf awarding multiple breakaways for the Tewksbury attackers. Erin Ciampa and Christina Capachetti locked down Charlestown on the defensive side with strong challenges and great passes to the forwards. Abigail O’Keefe, Emily Hankins, and Lauren Countie put constant pressure on the Chalrestown keeper taking advantage of turnovers and sliding past the defense. Abigail picked up a soft pass on the left side and pushed into open ground until she got in range and then sent in a great left kick to the side of the net for the first score of the game. Rebecca Deck was aggressive in net for Tewksbury coming out strong to challenge the Charlestown offense and squash their attack before they ever threatened the goal. As the end of the first half approached, Rebecca turned away the attack and the ball was pushed forward where Abigail sent a nice pass up for Julia Devlin who gathered it in and dashed past the defenders finishing her attack with a blast into the net for a 2-0 score.
The second half was a little chaotic as Charlestown tried everything they could to get on the board. Shayla Lee had a great showing in net coming out to challenge the forwards and snatching the ball away on every attack. The girls held out against the pressure and played their way to an impressive 2-0 win on the road.

Reading - 1
The Tewksbury Girls U12-1 travel team experienced their first game on artificial turf in Reading this past Saturday with mixed results. It took the Redmen some time to get used to the fast conditions and unfortunately paid the price when they fell behind in the 1st half 1-0. Tewksbury’s offense had a hard time getting going early, but found their footing as the game wore on. Several scoring chances were turned away by the Reading goaltender. Rachel Prevost and Emily Sessa led the way with multiple shots on goal. Lillian Holden just missed the net on a great one touch from a corner kick. As usual, Jessica Caccoila frustrated her opponents with her speed and tenacity. Kayla Devlin, Lindsay Harris and Alison Paracini won several one on one battles with their aggressive play. Tewksbury tied the game with ten minutes to go on a direct kick. Rachel Sessa lobbed a beautiful shot from just under half field that found its way over the Reading goalie and into the back of the net. With just two minutes remaining, Rachel Prevost make a great pass to a charging Maggie Penta, who just missed the goal with a left foot shot. Victoria Mirabito, Isabelle Picher, Maggie Penta and Rachel Sessa played solid defense and produced exceptional corner and goal kicks throughout the game. Sam Mercurio played great in goal for Tewksbury. She made the saves look easy and was able to put Tewksbury on offense quickly with her powerful punting. Tewksbury earned another hard fought tie and with three games remaining is still in position to achieve one of their goals; to secure a spot in the Commissioners Cup.

Westford – 0
After two weeks where every bounce seemed to go against us, today Tewksbury GU12-2 went down to Westford to try and regain their momentum from the first few weeks of the season and avenge a 1-1 tie in a game where Tewksbury was clearly the better team on the field that day.
The opening kickoff went to Westford but it was almost all Tewksbury from then on. The midfielders were the foundation of our game today and the majority of the offense was due to their hard work and aggressive play. “Hurricane” Brittany Malfa was tracking down loose balls on every play and creating offense with sharp passes, long dribbles down to the corner, and precision crosses to her forwards. Ashley Antonelli had a strong game beating defenders consistently and taking some shots when she broke free on quality scoring chances. Kayla Makooi performed her best soccer in every way and fired off a number of great shots. Tewksbury thought they had their first goal after a huge scramble in front of the net but the referee waved it off much to our disappointment. Under the tremendous pressure Westford gave up a corner kick shortly thereafter. Sam Surowiec set up the shot as Tewksbury got into position. The ball dropped down right in the pack and Sarah Ciampa timed her jump perfectly to knock the ball into the net for the first score of the game. Minutes later the attack yielded another corner and this time Kelly Fortier sent the ball in. Madison Wescott read the play perfectly and fired the ball wide of the goalie for our second goal and a score of 2-0. Defensively there were a few exciting moments but Vivianna Bain was lightning quick across the middle of the field and intercepted many would-be attackers long before they could develop a scoring chance. Katie Famiglietti was masterful as she battled one-on-one with Westford attackers and picked their pockets time and again to rob them of their offense. The two times Westford sent a ball in, the aggressive play of keeper Emily Langone was too much to overcome and the ball only saw the inside of the 18-box a couple times in the half.
As the second half played out, things were still going in favor of Tewksbury. Keeper Allison Couillard made several quality saves including one where she raced out of the box to deflect the oncoming attack. Andrea DiCiaccio bolstered the defense and the midfield doing a fantastic job of getting to the ball whenever it was open and maintaining possession for the team. Ten minutes in, Madison Wescott chased down a beautiful ball in from the midfield and buried it in the net giving the keeper no chance to make the save, pushing the score to 3-0. Emily Langone helped circle the wagons on defense and keep Westford off the board for a great victory on the road against a tough opponent.

Wilmington 1
The Tewksbury GU12-3 traveled to Wilmington on Saturday, May 21st to take home their 3rd win in a row. With Jocelyn Duval protecting the net for the first half and Karina Crowley for the second half of the game, Danielle Carrigg and Samantha Alman played strong defensive positions breaking up most of the offensive plays by Wilmington. Samantha Alman continuously pushed players to the sides, trapping them in the corners and winning the ball for her team. Danielle Carrigg not only broke up plays, acted as a wall for deflection and assisted in the first goal by Tewksbury, with a long throwing to her team mate Emily Stewart who blasted to ball into the net, giving Tewksbury the lead. Wilmington responded before the first half with a goal of sending the teams into a 1-1 tie for the half. For the second half the defensive stance became stronger for Tewksbury with the midfielders’ backing up their defense as needed. Rachel Figuica and robin Czarniecki put pressure on Wilmington repetitively driving the ball down the side and crossing it to the net or dumping the ball mid offensive field allowing the Tewksbury midfielders shots on net. Becky Reynolds, robin and Rachel made excellent passes utilizing both the front players and back players for support. The winning goal came from Maeve Moynihan after a series of triangular passes from Rachel Figuica, Emily Stewart and Jocelyn Duval, opening up the field to leave Maeve wide open in front of the net. Again the girls were able to avenge their prior loss with Wilmington and were strong players as they battle through the heat with only one substitution. Great Win girls! The Tewksbury GU12-3 will be at home for a Friday night game against Chelmsford, before heading to Billerica to participate in the Memorial Day tournament.

Melrose 1
Playing on a rather warm but overcast evening, Tewksbury kept pace with a gritty Melrose squad before giving up the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 loss. Even though they were left off of the board, Tewksbury created numerous chances to score. After Dimple Gandhi dribbled the ball up the right sideline, she passed to a cutting Catherine Ozek for a kick on the Melrose goal. Roaming at midfield, Alyssa Aurilio and Kelsie Allen intercepted opponents' passes to set up Nicole Salvato and Jessica Ripley for their attempts at the Melrose keeper. Emily Duquette just missed a golden opportunity when she blasted a penalty kick over the Melrose net. Working together moving the ball in their lanes, Katie Adelsberger, Ariana Calouro, Monica Aronson, and Makayla Calouro maintained pressure in the offensive zone. From the backfield, Kayleigh Bishop, Molly McDonald, and Mary Bliss provided key sweeps, crushing goal kicks, and deft tackles throughout the match. As goalkeepers, Shealagh Doherty and Stephanie McHatton knocked down Melrose strikes, scooped rebounds, and punted the ball from their net.
Tewksbury 0
Woburn 1
Participating in a competitive match, Tewksbury came up short against Woburn, 1-0. After identifying a pinching Woburn backfield, Tewksbury consistently sent players racing toward the Woburn goalkeeper. Rushing in at left forward, Nicole Salvato had her attempt turned away. Pouncing on a loose ball, Kelsie Allen pummeled her kick over the Woburn goal. Alyssa Aurilio drove the ball beyond the center circle to send Jessica Ripley in for a scoring chance. After being rewarded with a penalty kick, Stephanie McHatton sailed her attempt over the Woburn net. Pursuing an errant rebound, Katie Adelsberger misfired from inside the penalty area. Dribbling the ball as right forward, Monica Aronson shielded it from her opponents to find Catherine Ozek trailing at her left. Ozek continued to carry the ball passing it up to Kayleigh Bishop, who put the ball on goal. After diving to deflect a Woburn scoring attempt, Molly McDonald hustled at center trying to capitalize for Tewksbury. Anchoring Tewksbury's defense, Mary Bliss continued to be reliable as sweeper. Doing double duty, Shealagh Doherty confidently turned away Woburn's kicks after covering her zone at midfield.
