"Castle Rock," the hit psychological thriller based Stephen King's stories and characters, makes extensive use of Tewksbury State Hospital.
TEWKSBURY, MA — Drivers in Tewksbury may experience delays Monday if traveling in the vicinity of Tewksbury State Hospital. Crews were at the hospital shooting scenes for the second season of "Castle Rock," the hit Hulu series based on Stephen Kings's stories and characters. Several scenes for the first season of the show were shot in Tewksbury which, along with other Massachusetts towns, stood in for the fictitious Maine town for which the show is named.
Crews were in Tewksbury in September and December 2017 to film scenes from season one, which premiered in July 2018. Tewksbury State Hospital was used as a backdrop for certain scenes in the first season. It's not the first star turn for the hospital, which opened in 1852. It recently served as a set in the critically-acclaimed 2016 Casey Affleck film "Manchester By The Sea."
Today, the state-run hospital offers mental health and critical care support for adults , as well as outpatient services for a variety of state health agencies.

While generous tax credits have made Massachusetts the site for several high-profile movie productions in recent years, and the state has a long history of serving as the setting for television shows, production of those TV shows has usually occurred elsewhere. The production of "Castle Rock" is based at New England Studios in Devens, making it the first scripted television show to be produced in the state since "Spencer For Hire" in the mid-1980s.
