Kevin Dick's Leadership Jolted Redmen to Postseason

The junior captain was a big reason the Tewksbury High School boys basketball team made the playoffs this year.

Kevin Dick provided great senior leadership for the Tewksbury High School boys basketball team, even if he’s only a junior.

The Redmen captain was a critical piece for a team that exceeded expectations in reaching the postseason.

“I’m kind of like the anchor. I help glue everyone together,” said Dick. “There was just one senior on the team, so I have to act older than I really am.”

Dick and second-year head coach Phil Conners helped the team reach the postseason for a second straight season. Unfortunately, the Redmen’s stay didn’t last long as they were eliminated with a 68-52 first round loss to Arlington on Monday night.

“No one thought we’d do anything this year,” said Dick. “So to get into the tournament meant a lot to us.”

A great deal of the team will return next year. Both Conners and Dick said it will be critical for players to hone their skills during the offseason so the team can continue its rise in North Division 2.

For Dick, who was a part of a 2-18 team as a freshman, playing with Conners has been an exciting change.

“He’s completely overhauled the whole system,” said Dick. “I never thought I would be a captain of a state tournament team. It’s something special.”
