7:42 p.m. -- The language in article 11, the change of the Town Clerk position, is being changed radically. The new language is more clearly defining the role of town clerk and its relationship with the town manager. It includes language on disciplinary procedures. This language seems to be as precise as the language in a charter section.
The language now states that the present town clerk will serve out her term until April 2014. At that time it will change to an appointed position. The debate has begun. This should be fun.
7:50 -- Warren Carey has spoken passionately against the article. He said he sees no reason for the status to change, given that the town has had good town clerks for the past several decades. He also didnt like the large number of amendments so far tonight.
8:01 p.m. -- Epic town meeting moment. Former Town Clerk Elizabeth Carey, from one side of the room, asked the town manager for an explanation relative to the Town Clerk position. From the other side of the room, Warren Carey, her husband, moved the question, saying "I don't care if Mrs. Crey gets her answer or not." Huge laughter.
8:06 p.m. There is a handicapped gentleman here and it occurs to be that since he cannot get up and down, the town needs to invest in paddles.
8:07 p.m. The vote on the amendment was 82-59 in favor. Now debating the article.
8:20 p.m. -- many people saying they want town Clerk to remain elected and dont want voting power to be taken from people. They have a point, some towns have elected treasurers, police chiefs/sheriffs, fire chiefs, town lawyer. This will be an interesting vote.
8:25 p.m. -- there has been a motion to indefinitely postpone the town clerk article. It failed 76-65. Now the vote on the article. Might be similar.
8:30 p.m. Passes 88-58. Town clerk will become appointed in 2014. And about half of those in attendance leave. Attendance now at about 70.
8:35 p.m. -- Articles 12, 13, 14, 15 pass overwhelmingly.
8:38 p.m. -- Article 16 is withdrawn as Montuori says more information is needed. Article 17 is adopted.
8:52 p.m. Article 18 and 19 have been adopted and Town Meeting is adjounred. Thanks for joining us and look to Tewksbury Patch for our followup coverage in the morning.
