Macy Sets Record as River Hawks Romp

Senior forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.) broke two school records on Sunday afternoon, notching five goals and 11 points in a single game, as the No. 3 UMass Lowell River Hawks steamrolled past the No. 8 Indiana University Crimson Hawks, 6-0.

This marks the second consecutive game that UMass Lowell has defeated its opponent by a 6-0 score. The non-conference tilt, played in Indiana, Pa., improved the River Hawks' record to 2-0 and evened Indiana to 1-1 overall.

Macy's records surpassed the previous marks of four goals and nine points, most recently set by classmate Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.) last season in a 9-1 victory over Saint Anselm at home on Sept. 19. Enaire notched nine points on four goals and an assist in the victory. Macy's accomplishments also rank her among leaders in the NCAA and Northeast-10 Conference in both categories.

In the first half, Macy opened scoring with an assist from fellow tri-captain Liz Day (North Andover, Mass.), her first of three assists on the afternoon. Macy then assisted on a goal by Enaire to put the River Hawks up 2-0. Before the break, sophomore Chelsea Gillies (Chelmsford, Mass.) set Macy up for her second goal of the day to give the squad a 3-0 advantage before halftime.

Picking up where they left off, Macy scored again off a Gillies assist to open the second. To close out the game and seal the 6-0 victory, Macy scored twice more, both off penalty corners. She was assisted both times by Day and fellow tri-captain Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, Mass.), when Hadley inserted the ball into the circle where Day pulled to the right and set up Macy for the tallies.

Freshman goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) earned her second shutout in as many games, stopping nearly a dozen shots on cage by the Crimson Hawks.

Next up, the River Hawks will stay in Indiana, Pa. and take on Millersville on Monday at noon.
