Man Who Escaped Tewksbury Hospital Found After Hourslong Search

A drone, a K-9, and helicopters were used in a search for a man who escaped Tewksbury State Hospital, police said.

TEWKSBURY, MA — A man escaped Tewksbury State Hospital on Sunday night and eluded authorities for hours, according to police.

Police received a report that a man had left hospital grounds without permission at 8:05 p.m.

Officers responded and searched the area along with a drone, two K-9s, the state police's Air Wing helicopter, and Wilmington police officers.

Authorities were unable to locate him at first. An officer found the man shortly after midnight at the Circle K at 1785 Andover St.

He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

This incident comes on the heels of another at Tewksbury State Hospital in which a man assaulted employees and escaped, according to police.

At the time, Police Chief Ryan Columbus called out the state to "fix this problem immediately," calling the threat posed to the community "unacceptable."
