Red Sox Top Braves, Cubs Clip Giants

Athletics win thriller over Astros in Senior League.

(Editor's note: The following information was submitted by the coaches and administration of the Tewksbury Girls Softball League.)

JR. U10 League

Mckesson Corp. Braves 8 – Steven C. Demetriou, DMD Red Sox 20

Lauren Eyssallenne got the first hit of the 2011 season, Hannah Knoops went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored, Jamie Quintiani also had a good night going 2 for 2 with1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Christina Spezzaferro pitched 2 solid innings with 2 K's and a put out at first.

McKesson Corp. Braves 10 – Tewksbury VFW Post 8164 Giants 6

Jessica Caredeo pitched 4 strong innings with 7 K's she also had a hot bat going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI's. Emma Spezzano was solid at first base with 2 put outs. Katie Quinn-Cry had a key hit in the 5th inning to propel the Braves to a win. Becca Smith had a good night going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's and 1 run scored.

Mr. Gutterman Cubs 7 – Wicked Cheesy Pizza Dodgers 7

Mr. Gutterman Cubs and the Dodgers played a tight game, ending in a tie.  Briana Walker and Carley Feingold gave the Cubs solid pitching on the mound.  Haley Mignon led the offense, going 4 for 4 at the plate. Kerry Shea (2 hits) and Isabella Schmidt (1 hit) also contributed on offense.  Elizabeth Taggart made good contact but the Dodgers defense kept her from gaining first base.  Mignon and Shea each caught a fly ball. Feingold made an unassisted out at third.  Walker and Alexa Harrington combined for an out at first.

The  Wicked Cheesy Dodgers  and Cubs  battled to a tied game, with the Cubs pulling out the tie with 3 runs in their last at-bat.  The Wicked Cheesy Dodgers were led by the solid pitching of Gianna Ragucci and  Hellen Johnson .  There were many heads up plays in the field by both teams, as they battled all game long.  Molly O’Neil and Amber Kelly had great games in the field, and at the plate, making plays that contributed to the tie. 

Mr. Gutterman Cubs 18  - McKesson Corp. Braves 5

Mr. Gutterman Cubs had much success at the plate during their game against the Braves. Haley Mignon had 3 hits, including a double. Alyssa Piccolo, Briana Walker, and Carley Feingold had 2 hits each.  Alexa Harrington and Kerry Shea each had a hit.  Ava Nickerson made good contact twice but the Braves strong defense resulted in put outs. The Cubs had terrific defense from Mignon who made four outs, three unassisted, and one on a throw from pitcher Carley Feingold. Feingold and Mignon both gave the team very good pitching.

Wicked Cheesy Dodgers 17, - C&A Awards Indians 11

The Wicked Cheesy Dodgers continued playing well this season, pulling out a win against a tough and spirited Indians team.  The Wicked Cheesy Dodgers  were led by the strong pitching performances of  Hellen Johnson, Abigail Naugler and first year pitcher Sarah Polimeno. Offensively Julia Giaimo, Emily Morabito, and Danielle Norton were clutch while Naugler, Giaimo and Brigh Cote all were tough defensively, playing great team defense in the win.

Intermediate League

Crystal Convenience Marlins 5 – Aubuchon Hardware Royals 1

The Royals and Marlins played a very close game all the way through.  Royals pitcher Teagan Trant pitched 5 strong innings not giving up any runs.  The Royals bats were active with hits from Amanda Ford and Paige McGaffigan.  Rightfielder, Riley Cote made a great stop and with a strong throw to first base, got the last out of the second inning.  Catcher, Niamh Cote was strong behind the plate.

Fantastic Sams Rockies 23 – Aubuchon Hardware Royals 1

The Royals lost to a good hitting Rockies team.  But the Royals also showed strong hitting. Catherine Butler had a double and two singles and Marissa Doherty had 2 singles.  In the field, Sarah Bishop made two consecutive outs in the first inning, catching a pop-up and fielding a grounder.  Pitchers for the Royals were Alyssa Mecurio and Molly Hodgson who both made key fielding outs.

Diamondbacks 11, Royals 10

Down a run in their last at bat, the Elia’s Country Store Diamondbacks won in dramatic fashion, grabbing an 11-10 victory from a tough Royals squad on May 13th.   Briana Haley led off the final inning with a walk.   Shannon Vasas drove in Haley with a thunderous left field single, her second of the game.  The final batter, Brooke Lamothe, hit a laser to right field for the game winner, scoring Vasas.  The Diamondbacks came out slugging, led by Julia Hartnett, Irene Houde and Sarah Benson.   Diamondbacks pitchers Dayna Salibe and Jennifer Campbell, making her season debut, held the Royals in check.   Great defense played an important role for the Diamondbacks, with second baseman Lauren Crupi doubling off a Royal at second base, first baseman Sarah Murray making numerous fly ball catches, third baseman Irene Houde making outs from deep in the hole at short and turning a nifty inning ending double play.  While catching, Jennifer Campbell played the part of goalie, blocking numerous balls.

Dovetail Construction Angels 18 – Custom Craft Mets 11

The Dovetail construction Angels won there fourth game Monday against the Mets to start a busy week of softball.  Pitching for the Angels were Victoria Maribito for 4 innings and Caitlyn Panessetti for 1 inning.  Defensive standout to Victoria Maribito for taking the mound for the first time since last year and striking out 7.  Offensive standout goes to Adrianna Favreau getting on base each at bat and scoring. 

 The Mets fell to the Angels 18-11 in their fourth game of the season.  Key defensive players for the Mets: Hope Splaine, who provided outstanding coverage at first base, and Sydney Papandrea and Hayley Marchant for commendable efforts in the outfield.  Key offensive players were Jaime Hajjar (with a double) and Emily Burns (with a base hit).  Pitchers for the Mets were Jaime Hajjar and Michelle Maciel.

 Dovetail Construction Angels – Byette Insurance Devil Rays

The fifth game this year for the Dovetail Construction Angels resulted in a win against the Devil Rays.  Pitching for the Angels were Adrianna Favreau and Frankie Cocca both with 3 innings each.  Both pitchers threw hard resulting in 16 strikeouts giving them the defensive standout for the game.  Every player was swinging at the plate making it an exciting game to watch and offensive standout goes to Adrianna Favreau with a grand slam in the 2nd inning.

Nationals 20– Custom Iron Craft Mets 8

The Mets lost to the Nationals 20-8.  Key defensive player of the game was Stefani Cunningham who made a very nice stop in left center field.  Key offensive players were Lauren Whelton (with two base hits) and Hope Splaine (with a base hit).  Pitchers for the Mets were Michelle Maciel and Emily Burns.

Crystal Convenience Marlins 9 - Custom Iron Craft Mets 6

The Mets lost to the Marlins 9-6 in a very close battle between the teams.  Key defensive players for the Mets: Hope Splaine (with a double play), Jaime Hajjar, Michelle Maciel and Emily Burns with numerous great plays in the field.  Key offensive players: Hope Splaine, Lauren Whelton, Michelle Maciel (each with a base hit) and Emily Burns (with 2 base hits).  Kelsey Kelley really shined on the mound, striking out 7 batters.

Senior League

B&M Office Installation Astros 20 – Gateway Car Wash Twins 5

The Twins, sponsored by Gateway Car Wash, looked took another big score on the chin in this one. The Twins fell behind early and just could not get the offense going to stay with the Astros. Amy Sampson, Andrea Doran and Erin Walsh toughed it out on the mound for the Twins. Mariah Wentzell made several nice plays at 3B and LC, while Audrey Casey played solid defense at 2B. Offensively the Twins did not produce much in the way of hits but Caitlin Morris and Brittany Fletcher each collected a hit and scored 2 of the Twins 5 runs.

Dry Wall Limited Orioles 10 – Gateway Car Wash Twins 9

The Twins, sponsored by Gateway Car Wash, lost a very hard fought close game against the Orioles Wednesday night. The Twins had an early slim 1 run lead until the 5th inning when the Orioles took the lead 8-3. In the bottom of the 6th the Twins stormed back to tie the game at 8s. The Orioles regained the lead 10-8 in the top of the 7th. The Twins scored 1 in the bottom half of the inning, but left a runner at 3rd base falling short of the comeback. Hillary Fletcher was terrific on the mound only giving up one big inning to the Orioles offense. Amy Sampson was busy defensively at 1B, while Britnee Dell Arciprete had a solid game behind the plate. The Twins bats were held in check by the solid Orioles pitching, but showed signs of life in the 6th inning rally. Offensively, the Twins were lead by Lauren Strainge with 2 hits and a run scored, and Erin Walsh reaching base in her 3 at-bats and scoring 3 runs.

Silva Brothers Construction Tigers 21,  Aurora Salon Athletics 20

The Tigers came up 1 run better in this slug fest.  The trio of Lauren Barletta (2 runs scored), Nicole Petherbridge, and Chelsea Grant split the assignment on the hill for the A's and held their ground against an extremely potent Tiger lineup. The Athletics offense was aggressive in trying to keep pace. Lisa Petrowski played great defense while drilling 3 singles and scoring 3 runs and Alyssa Hand contributed several clutch put-outs in the field while adding 2 base hits and a run scored.  Meghan Arsenault was an anchor all night at 1st base making a handful of pretty defensive plays. Nicole Petherbridge added to the offense as well with a triple and 3 RBI, but in the end it wasn't enough to cage a talented bunch of Tigers. 

Aurora Salon Athletics 12,  B&M Office Installations Astros 11

Another competitive back-and-forth affair but this time the A's got some final inning heroics to edge a tough Astros squad that played determined despite being short a few key players.  For the Athletics, Loren Sullivan sparked the defense with 2 stellar plays behind the plate and another at first base before capping the night off with a game winning single & rbi in the bottom of the sixth. Melissa Markwarth added a couple of gems of her own, making a nice running catch in RF and snaring a line drive at 2B. At the plate Chelsea Grant set the tone in the first inning with a grand slam deep down the RF line. Meg Arsenault had a superb game from the lead off position, drawing 3 walks, stealing 2 bases, and scoring 3 of her team's 12 runs. Lisa Petrowski picked up the win, going the distance on the mound, striking out 3 Astros and helping her own cause with the bat by contributing a triple and drawing 2 walks.

Silva Brothers Construstion Tigers 21- Aurora Salon Athletics 20

The Silva Brothers Construction Tigers won a very close game against a tough Athletics squad.  Shannon Smith got the start and pitched the first 4 innings in outstanding fashion.  Jessica Lehmann, Michelle McKenney, Caleigh Finneral and Jess Silva each had great offensive nights getting key hits at big spots in the game.  Hannah Benning, Jamie Fowler, Molly McDonald and Tayla LeGrand played very well defensively hustling in the field all game.  Ari Brangiforte and Kasey Sjostedt came in and pitched very well to close out the last two innings.  Crystal Lemus was the star of the game coming up with a huge double over the right fielder's head to knock in the game winner.

Silva Brothers Construction Tigers 8 -  Crystal Convenience Pirates 4

The Silva Brothers Construction Tigers came out on top of a very close well played ballgame. Caleigh Finneral got the start and went the distance pitching out of trouble on several occasions.  The key play of the game was a perfect bunt by Michelle McKenney that she beat out to start a 5 run rally in the fourth.  Jamie Fowler, Jessica Lehmann and Molly McDonald all came around to score to give the Tigers the lead for good. Tayla LeGrand, Kasey Sjostedt and Shannon Smith played very well defensively hustling in the field all game.  Crystal Lemus, Ari Brangiforte and Hannah Benning played very well on both sides of the ball.  Jess Silva scored two runs and was outstanding behind the plate defensively.
