Redmen Open Conference Play with Loss to Lions

Tewksbury hangs tough but has trouble finishing, losing 12-8 to Chelmsford.

Tewksbury's Ryan Doherty sank  a hole-in-one against Lawrence on Tuesday, but found no such luck on Wednesday against Chelmsford.

Granted, the senior captain managed an impressive 4 and 2 victory  in his match play, but his Redmen fell to Chelmsford 12-8 on Wednesday at Trull Brook Golf Course.

Chelmsford's Peter Lawlor and Dan Heath led the Lions, winning their matches 2 and 1 and 3 and 2, respectively.

Things got real interesting late in the match, as the score was tied 5-5 after the first two groups completed their rounds.  Tewksbury won the first group 3-2 while Chelmsford took the second.

It was Chelmsford that finished strong, however, and in the end took the match on the road.

"Well, for our first match of the year we played well. We're still feeling around with our lineup, but our younger guys came through today. Plus, a win on the road is always good," said Chelmsford head coach Andy Shupe, in his eighth season with the team.

For Tewksbury, while they showed some promise, both coaches know there is still plenty of work to be done.

"The only way we'll get better as a whole is out here on the course and in the matches," says Coach Jim Sullivan.

Coach Ron Drouin offered some solace to his team, saying "it wasn't a disaster, we did a lot of good things. But we have to learn how to finish. We have some guys that are inexperienced in matches. They aren't battle hardened enough to finish, but they'll get there."

This is certainly true for a Tewksbury team that started five of eight players who have two or fewer varsity matches under their belt on Wednesday.

Tewksbury continues their season on Friday at Methuen, while Chelmsford is at home the same day.

Individual match winners were as follows:

1) Ryan Doherty, Tewksbury, 4 and 2

2) Peter Lawlor, Chelmsford, 2 and 1

3) Dan Heath, Chelmsford, 3 and 2

4) Craig Semenza Tewksbury, 2 and 1

5) Eddie Luo Chelmsford, 2 and 1

6) Jake Ahern Chelmsford, halved

6)Mike Casey Tewksbury, halved

7) Pat Doherty Tewksbury, 1-Up

8) Cam Martin Chelmsford, 1-Up
