Redmen Roundup -- TMHS Girls Knocks Off Lawrence, 59-36

_scored a career-high 16 points to lead the _ to a convincing, 59-36 win over Lawrence High Friday night. The win was the third in the last four games for the suddenly resurgent TMHS girls.

"It was nice to see Chelsee step up like that," said _. "We talked to her before the game about how we need her to perform both offensively and defensively and take advantage of her basketball abilities, and she really did."

Sophomore guard Sara Semenza also had a strong game scoring 14 points as the Redmen built a 26-14 halftime lead and cruised to their third win of the season against seven losses. Junior guard Nicole Chaet added 10 points while sophomore guard Shannon Semenza scored six. Senior guards Sheri Liggiero and Katie Doherty chipped in four points each while freshman forward Shannon Smith had three and senior guard Amanda Cossar had two.

Tewksbury now stands at 3-7 overall, and 3-5 in Merrimack Valley Conference play. As was the case last year, the TMHS girls' mid-season resurgence has put them in position to qualify for the MIAA state tournament. Tewksbury must finish with a .500 record against Division 2 (and lower) opponents to qualify for the state tournament, and the Redmen would have to win four out of their last five Division 2 (and lower) games to qualify.

"With a couple of exceptions, we've to the toughest part of our schedule behind us," Bradley said. "We're young and we're still making a lot of mistakes but we're learning and we're making some progress."

One of the aforementioned exceptions is Tewksbury's next opponent, Billerica High. TMHS hosts Billerica Tuesday night in the team's third annual tribute to former teammate Meghan McCarthy, who passed away in January of 2010. Game time Tuesday is 7:00 p.m.

HOCKEY TEAM TIES LINCOLN-SUDBURY, 1-1

When does a tie feel like a win?

When your team scores the tying goal with just 40 seconds left in the game, that's when.

_ salvaged an important point in the Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League Division 2 standings when senior forward Derek Petti scored in the final minute of the game to give the Redmen a 1-1 tie with MVC/DCL rival Lincoln-Sudbury Saturday afternoon.

For Petti, it was his team-leading 13th goal in just 12 games this season. Senior forwards Chris Conners and Patrick Doherty assisted on the goal.

_ stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced in the game. The game had been a hard-fought, scoreless tie until Lincoln-Sudbury scored with just 3:27 to play in the game.

But Petti answered in the nick of time, and Tewksbury now stands at 8-2-2 overall and 3-0-2 in MVC/DCL Div. 2 play. The defending Division 2 state champion Redmen need just one more victory to qualify for 2012 state tournament play, and they'll have an opportunity to punch their ticket when they host Dracut High School Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. at the Breakaway Ice Center in Tewksbury.

WRESTLERS GRAB TWO MORE WINS

_ extended his unbeaten streak to 27 straight matches with two wins by pinfall and the _ took both ends of a tri-meet with in Hopkinton on Saturday.

Tewksbury beat Catholic Memorial, 48-30 and Hopkinton, 57-18 to raise its dual meet record to 9-6 this season.

Six different Redmen were able to pin both of their opponents in the match. Matt Greenwood got two pins at 132 pounds, as did Joe Burger at 138. Dan Altavesta pinned both of his opponents at 145, as did 182-pounder Derek Tarpey. Sophomore heavyweight Nick Jansen also won both of his matches by pinfall.

Tim Martel (195 pounds) and Mike Davidian (160) each had one win by pinfall.

Tewksbury hosts Malden High School Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Winn Middle School gym.

BOYS BASKETBALL LOSES TO BILLERICA

_ poured in a career-high 19 points but it wasn't enough for the Tewksbury High boys basketball team, which lost to Billerica, 52-47 Friday night.

_had 10 points while senior guards Bobby Lumbard and Anthony Chiccarelli had seven each. Senior guard Mike Doucette added four.

Tewksbury falls to 5-8 overall, 3-4 in Merrimack Valley Conference action. The Redmen face a tough week ahead visiting Lawrence on Tuesday, Tyngsboro on Wednesday and Central Catholic on Friday.
