Redmen Roundup: TMHS Track Teams Split With Methuen

You get the sense that t girls track team may be peaking at just the right time.

and won two more to lead the Redmen to a 94-50 rout of MVC rival Methuen on Wednesday.

Quigley won the triple jump (32-8), 100 hurdles (16.6) and 400 hurdles (68.7). Matovu won the shot put (31-9.75) and the discus (80-2.75).

"Matilda Matovu really gave us a lift today.  She took both throws and had her best performance of the season.  Jim Burgoyne, our discus coach, mentioned to me afterwards that he really thinks Matilda has a world of potential in that event.," said Tewksbury Coach John Byrnes. "Kelly Quigley hit season's bests in all three of her events today.  She really looks like she's coming into form at the most important time of year."

Tewksbury swept the javelin (Courtney Spinelli, Rebecca Clark, Sara Semenza), the 100 (1. Sarah Hogan, Jen Schultz,  Erin Morrissey) and the 100 hurdles (Quigley, Jess Amedee, Ashley Callahan).

The best race of the day may have been in the 400, where Jess Bridle (59.3) outdueled teammate Sara Semenza (60.1) down the stretch to squeeze out the win.

"We had a ton of other contributors today as well," said Byrnes. "Rachel Eatherton (mile), Bridget Blair (800), Erin Morrissey (100), Becca Clark (2 mile), Rachael McCabe (2 mile), Amanda Cossar (PV/4x100), Ashley Callahan (100h/400h), Olivia Gallella (TJ), Christina Marshall (Discus), Kelsie Bradley (4x100) all put themselves into the box score as well.  It was a good team effort, and we're coming together well.  In terms of supporting each other as well as the boys team, this is the best we've been all season."

Boys Fall Just Short Against Methuen

You'll have to forgive the Tewksbury High boys track team if this script has started to feel a bit stale.

Clinging to a 72-68 lead entering the final event of the day (4x400 relay), the Redmen couldn't seal the deal and dropped a 73-72 decision to Methuen. It was the third straight meet the Redmen have lost on the final race.

"Again we were so close. We had them right where we wanted them, but some things just did not work out," said boys track coach Bill Meuse. "I just feel so bad for the kids. They have trained very hard and are improving every meet but we are just making costly mistakes at the most inopportune times. My heart goes out to the seniors because with a few points here and there, this could be a totally different season."

Corey Cataldo led the way for Tewksbury with wins in the 400 hurdles (60.5), long jump (19-5) and triple jump (38-6.50). The Redmen also got victories from Eddie Matuvo in the 110 high hurldes  (16.2), Kevin Jones in the high jump (5-6) and John Fiorello in the javelin (129-11.50).

"Again our distance kids came through big time. Brian Amaral, Corey Thomas and Kip Horahan went up against some of the best runners in the state and they held their own and then some," said Meuse. "Thomas and Amaral ran two of the smartest races I have ever seen, which help set up the effort by Kip Horahan who came in 2nd in the 800 with a career best 2:02.2 time."

Jones also took second in the long jumpo and Matovu took second in the high jump.

Baseball - Tewksbury falls to Chelmsford in 10 innings

For 10 innings, the Tewksbury and Chelmsford baseball teams went at each other, matching each other play for play, pitch for pitch. But in the bottom of the 10th, a couple of mistakes made the difference and Chelmsford escaped with a 4-3 win.

Tewksbury had jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to see the Lions scratch their way back against Redmen starter Zac DiRocco. DiRocco pitched a brilliant game, scattering seven hits over 9.1 innings and striking out four, while walking only one.

Tewksbury grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th but the Lions responded with two in the home half of the inning to get the win.

Frankie McLaughlin led the Tewksbury offense with a double, two singles and two runs scored. Brad Gahagan, Cam Oliveira (RBI), Allyn Hood and Matt Skorz also had hits for the Redmen (4-7).

Softball -- Tewksbury no-hit by Ramirez, Dracut, 7-0

The softball team ran into a buzzsaw in the person of Dracut ace Lauren Ramirez, who shut down the powerful Redmen attack for her third no-hitter of the year, striking out 10 along the way. Dracut is now 12-1. Tewksbury is 8-3.
