Scam Alert: Tewksbury Police Warn Of Fake 'Power Company' Calls
Callers claim you're owed a refund and then ask for your social security number, the department warned on Facebook.
TEWKSBURY, MA — Tewksbury Police warned on Facebook recently of a new phishing scam. In it, an automated caller claims to be from your power company and apologizes for a billing error. The recording says you are entitled to a refund and a discount in coming billing cycles. At that point, you are connected to a live customer service representative, who asks for personal information: your name, date of birth and social security number.
"If it seems too good to be to be true, it probably is," the department wrote.
