Tewksbury 2005 Hockey Team skates in Championship Game

The Tewksbury 2005 Hockey All-Star Team competed in the annual Breakaway Invitational Cup from May 29th to June 1st at Breakaway Ice Center in Tewksbury and skated their way to the Championship Game before falling to Andover.

The Tewksbury 2005s opened the tourney on Thursday May 29th with a dominating 6-2 win over the Lynnfield-Saugus 2005s, getting 4 goals from Sammy Taber, and a goal each for Conor Cremin and Matthew Cooke.  Brady Chapman added 4 assists and Tyler Edwards had 2 assists in the big win.

On Friday May 30th the Tewksbury 2005s took on a Billerica 2005 team that has one of the best goalies in the entire state.  The Tewksbury 2005s peppered the Billerica goalie with 40+ shots but were only able to get a goal from Brady Chapman and fell 2-1.  The Tewksbury 2005s got great defensive efforts in the Billerica game from Nick DiCioccio, James Kierce, Collin Strong, and Alex Sovie.

On Saturday May 31st the Tewksbury 2005s were back at the rink for a battle with the Andover 2005s.  The Tewksbury 2005s had the early lead thanks to goals by Nick Calouro, Brady Chapman, Sammy Taber, and Matthew Cooke.  Megan Cunningham made a number of acrobatic saves that had fans from both teams cheering for her.  The Andover 2005s battled back late in the game and skated away with a 6-4 win.

The Playoff round started early Sunday morning with the Tewksbury 2005s back on the ice against the Billerica 2005 and the kids from Tewksbury skated away with a hard-fought 2-1 win thanks to great goaltending from Megan Cunningham and goals from Sammy Taber and Brady Chapman (the game winner with 1:12 left in the game).

Next up for the Tewksbury 2005s was a semi-final match up against #1 seed and undefeated MASCO.  The Tewksbury kids dug down deep and played their best all-around game of the tourney.  They got great goaltending from Megan Cunningham, and once again the defensive crew of James Kierce, Nick DiCioccio, Alex Sovie, and Collin Strong did a tremendous job of slowing down the speedy and talented MASCO forwards.  The line of Conor Cremin, Matthew Cooke, and Nick Calouro got the Tewksbury 2005s on the board first with great passing down low, resulting in Cooke burying a one-timer.  MASCO battled back and tied the game early in the final period.  The capacity crowd at Breakaway was on the edge of their seats as time was winding down, expecting overtime but with just under 30 seconds left in the game Tyler Edwards made a nice pass to Brady Chapman who was flying down the left wing boards.  Chapman sent a pass into the slot to Sammy Taber, who fired a wicker wrister under the crossbar for the winning goal and a date in the Championship Game.

The Tewksbury 2005s got a quick rest and some much needed nourishment into their bodies before they had to be back on the ice for their 3rd game in 4 hours.  The Tewksbury 2005s battled hard but ran out of gas and ended up taking home the runner-up trophy after a great weekend of hockey.

The Tewksbury 2005s would like to thank their parents, brothers/sisters, and grandparents for making this such a fun weekend!
