Evening Book Group Meeting: Beartown

Wednesday, May 29, 6:30pm

Find out what's happening in Tewksburyfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Join us for a discussion of Beartown by Fredrik Backman. People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever-encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built long ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All their hopes and dreams now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys. New members are always welcome. Copies of the book are available at the Front Desk. No registration required.

Wednesday, May 29, 7pm

Gayle Saks, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, will share her mother’s harrowing story. Gayle will also discuss the need to pass these stories down to the next generation as they serve as critical pieces of cultural history. Saks has written about everything from her mother’s suicide, online dating, to her work with male, female and juvenile inmates and those with substance abuse issues, with deep honesty, candor and humor. Her writing on substance abuse has appeared in HuffPost, The Fix, mindbodygreen, and Thought Catalog. She is currently working on her memoir, You Ain’t No Soccer Mom, about her work with inmates, her time as a counselor in an all-male sober living program and her current role as an Admissions Counselor at a New England rehabilitation facility.
