Native Americans & Stereotypes

What does it means to be sensitive and respectful of Native Americans? What we have learned about Native Americans and what we think we know is often inaccurate or even offensive. But how do we know? Terms such as "Indian," "totem pole," "tribe," "pioneer," and "costume" may seem benign, when, in fact, there is a larger context of deculturalization and cultural appropriation that needs to be acknowledged and integrated into discussions. Begin to unlearn, and then relearn, the First Nations story through a critical analysis of images, history, and words used in the English language. Led by Claudia A. Fox Tree, M.Ed., who has taught anti-racism and multicultural education courses to teachers, school staff, and at the college level for over twenty-five years. Claudia is on the board of the Massachusetts Center for Native Americans and the Massachusetts liaison for the United Confederation of Taíno People. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Morning Concert: Bits of Broadway

Enjoy a concert featuring Broadway music from Tewksbury resident Carol Ann Robitaille. The morning will feature songs from Cabaret, Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, Funny Girl, Funny Lady, Going My Way, Pajama Game, and more. Robitaille frequently performs at several nearby assisted living facilities and nursing homes. ("They like me because they don't have to turn up their hearing aides.") Film Screening: First Man

Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood's newest DVD releases -- First Man, a biographical drama starring Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, and Jason Clarke. A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Rated PG-13. 141 minutes. For ages 3 to 6. Each month, preschoolers can explore different science themes with Miss Heather by moving through a variety of stations. In The Media

Tuesday, January 22, 5:30pm

A group where teens from any political party or belief system can come to have a civil discussion about current topics in the media or our community. We will look at different articles, videos or other sources to gain knowledge prior to our discussion. Each month we will go over tips and ground rules for having a civil conversation. Teens who participate will receive an hour of community service. Snacks will be provided if teens register at least a day prior to the program. Register HERE.
