Tewksbury Police Warn Of Holiday Increase In Package Theft

The department offered tips on avoiding porch piracy this holiday season.

TEWKSBURY, MA — Tewksbury police warned residents recently of a likely rise in package thefts during the holiday season.

"With an increase in online shopping & shipping, comes an increase in package thefts," the police said on Facebook Nov. 24. "Please take precautions to avoid falling victim."

The department offered the following preventative steps residents can take:

  • "Deliver to a package lockers.
  • Schedule delivery times and keep tracking information.
  • Ship packages to your workplace, if your employer allows it.
  • Require a signature for your packages.
  • Install/maintain a security camera as a deterrent.
  • If you are expecting a package delivery and no family members will be home to receive it, alert a neighbor to watch/retrieve it for you rather than leaving it unattended."
