(Tewksbury, MA, October 27, 2020) – The Community Development Department seeks Board of Selectmen adoption of the Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) and Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Plan at the November 24, 2020 meeting. The MVP Grant Program provides support for cities and towns in Massachusetts to begin the process of planning for climate change resiliency, and implement priority projects.

The Town of Tewksbury was awarded funding to complete the MVP Planning Grant program and to update the Town’s Hazard Mitigation Plan in 2019. By completing the project, Tewksbury will be eligible for federal FEMA grant programs, as well as State MVP Action Grants to implement hazard mitigation and climate resiliency projects. On January 22, 2020, the Town held a Community Resilience Building Workshop with a group of local stakeholders to identify strengths, vulnerabilities, and recommendations for next steps to address hazard mitigation and climate resiliency. In addition, a public survey and pre-recorded information session was posted in April of 2020 for further public feedback.

Communities who complete the MVP program become certified as an MVP community and are eligible for additional grant funding opportunities. Tewksbury received MVP designation by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) on September 30, 2020.

Tewksbury has submitted its plan to FEMA Region 1 and the EEA for approval. To complete the approval process, the plan must be formally adopted by the Board of Selectmen within one year of this review. Adoption of the plan allows the Town of Tewksbury to authorize responsible departments to execute their responsibilities demonstrated in the plan. The plan contains several future projects to mitigate potential impacts from natural hazards, as well as climate change, in the Town of Tewksbury.
