Tewksbury Special Town Meeting Results

Here's a quick look at how things broke down at Special Town Meeting Tuesday night.

TEWKSBURY, MA — Tewksbury residents met at the Tewksbury Memorial High School Tuesday night to discuss 24 articles at the town's Special Town Meeting.

In total, 21 of the 24 Town Meeting articles were adopted out of the 24-article Town Meeting warrant. Articles, 17 and 18 were both defeated at Town Meeting, and Article 22 was withdrawn by Board of Selectman Chair Bruce Panilaitis.

Among the most hotly contested articles, Article 22 would have allowed the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen to appoint all 11 positions on the Council on Aging. Under the current bylaw, the COA chairman appoints six of the council members while the Selectmen appoint the remaining five.

Article 17, which would allow the Selectmen to establish a speed limit of 25 miles per hour in thickly settled or business districts without conducting a traffic study, was defeated. Additionally, Article 18 which would allow the Selectmen to create "Safety Zones" without a traffic study was also defeated.

Voters also approved Article 16, which allows the appropriation and transfer $125,000 for the historic rehabilitation of the State Hospital Cemetery. Article 14, which allows for the appropriation and transfer of $6,800 to rehabilitate the Mico Kaufman Memorial to World War II veterans was also adopted.
