Tewksbury Student Named as Commended Student in National Merit Scholarship Program

She is one of 34,000 students nationwide to receive the designation.

TEWKSBURY, MA — A Tewksbury Memorial High School student has been named as a commended student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program, the district announced Tuesday.

Claire Thompson, a TMHS senior, received a Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program. She is one of about 34,00 commended students throughout the nation.

“We are very proud of Claire Thompson’s performance on the PSATs last fall. She is an exceptional student and young woman,” said TMHS Principal Kristen Vogel in a press release.

Although Thompson will not continue in the 2017 for national merit scholarship awards, she placed among the top five percent of more than $1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test.

“You work all year toward these tests and to see it finally pay off is nice. The PSAT test helped with the practice questions helped. I plan to go to college and leaning toward medicine,” said Thompson.
