The Wonderful World of Stamps at Tewksbury Public Library
The Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History is visiting the Tewksbury Public Library next Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30pm.
On Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m., join Henry Lukas, director of education at the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History, to learn everything you've ever wanted to know about postage stamps and the postal system.
Various stamps and postal objects will be on display. Through a multimedia presentation, attendees will learn about: the history of the first postage stamp; the most popular US stamps ever printed; the Post Office's criteria to determine a subject for a new stamp; the US stamps that will be issued in the coming months; the first woman was to appear on a US postage stamp; printing mistakes that made stamps extremely valuable; and unique stamps of other countries, such as ones that smell like coffee and chocolate; are made of wood; or include volcanic ash.
The Spellman Museum is one of two public museums in the United States devoted to stamps and postal history. Founded in 1960, the Museum’s collection now includes over 2,000,000 items, including those from President Dwight Eisenhower. The museum is an independent, not-for-profit cultural organization with a mission to promote knowledge and understanding of worldwide history and geography through the study of stamps, letters, and other artifacts of people's communication through the mail. The museum is a partner in the Regis College Museum Studies Program providing formal classroom support and internship and practicum experiences for students.
