TMHS Boys Track Team Takes Charge In MVC Div. 2
Tewksbury crushes Methuen, 87-58 on a day filled with state qualifiers and personal bests.
With 35 years of coaching under his belt, it takes a lot to get Tewksbury High all worked up.
But Levine's Redmen did just that Monday afternoon in Methuen, as the TMHS tracksters posted more personal bests and state qualifying times and distances than Levine could keep track of while steam rolling Methuen, 87-58.
The win puts Tewksbury, now 2-0 in Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2 meets, in position to capture yet another league crown in the coming weeks.

"It was a great, great meet by so many kids," Levine said. "We told the kids before the meet that the cream of the crop steps forward in big meets like this one, and they sure did today."
, , and were the first four names to roll off of Levine's tongue, as all four seniors had banner days scoring critical points in at least two events each.

Despite the fact that Methuen's throwing contingent is one of the strongest in the MVC, Sugrue took second place in both the javelin and the discus and qualified for the state meets in both events. Sugrue threw 135'0" in the discus and 159'1" in the javelin. Sugrue has now qualified for states in the discus, the javelin and the shot put.
"Sugrue's throw in the discus was a personal best by something like 20 feet," Levine said. "The kid is really starting to come into his own. He's always had the tools but he hasn't always had the drive to succeed, but this year he does."
Arcari turned in another double win in the sprints, clocking a 11.1 second 100-meter dash good for first place, and taking first in the 200 in 23.2 seconds.
Vibber took first place in the triple jump at 40' 6" and won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.0. He also cleared 5' 8" in the high jump to take second in that event. Vibber qualified for the state meets in both the triple jump and hurdles.
"Vibber had a real good day," Levine said. "He's starting to come back (from a back injury) into real good form. Our only loss so far this year was to Lowell by three points, and we didn't have Vibber that day. That shows how much he means to us."
Kirby won the pole vault at 11'0" and barely broke a sweat doing it. He then led a sweep in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.5 seconds. Kirby also pressed Arcari in the 200, finishing second in 23.4 seconds, just 0.2 seconds behind Arcari.
also scored in three events. Cataldo won the long jump in 20'8" and took second in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.5. The super soph took third in the triple jump at 37' 10".
Sophomore Brian Amaral took first in the mile at 4:42.5 and senior Colin Foley won the 800-meters in 2:03.8. Senior Stefan Monteiro was second in the triple jump and third in the high jump.
The 4x100-meter relay team of C.J. Sutherland, Johnny DiGiorgio, Pat Bernardo and Stefan Monteiro took first place. Bernardo was second in the 100-meters at 11.4 seconds.
Roy Felix was second in the 400 meters and Nick Parsons took third in the pole vault. Freshman Eddie Matovu took third in the 110-meter hurdles. John Fiorello was third in the javelin, Kip Horahan was third in the mile and Christian Taylor took third in the discus. George Kuegler had a second in the 110-meter hurdles and a third in the 400-meter hurdles.
"We're real excited because we're qualifying (for states) in every single event," Levine said. "That's going to make us a contender for the Class B state title in a couple weeks. Central (Catholic) and Mansfield are two real good teams but we're gaining on them week by week."
In the MVC, Tewksbury has two big meets left at Dracut on Wednesday and at Billerica next Monday. Two wins would clinch the MVC Division 2 title for Tewksbury.
"Beating Methuen gives us a leg up toward winning the MVC title," Levine said. "This was a big meet to win."
