WALPOLE, MA — Two longtime Walpole police officers have moved into new leadership roles within the department.
Police Chief Kelleher formally recommended promoting Detective Sergeant Ian Tolland to lieutenant and Officer Michelle O'Neil to sergeant at Tuesday's Select Board meeting, according to the Walpole Police Department.
Tolland, a Walpole native and Walpole High School graduate, joined the department in 2011. He was promoted to detective in 2015, sergeant in 2019 and detective sergeant in 2021.
Most recently, Tolland oversaw the department's Detective Division and served as its evidence officer. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Bridgewater State University and received the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award.
Tolland's wife, Katie, and their two sons pinned his lieutenant's badge during the ceremony.
O'Neil, also a Walpole native who attended local schools, joined the department in 2017. She has served as a field training officer, crime prevention officer, elder affairs officer, Crisis Intervention Team leader and overdose outreach liaison.
O'Neil holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Bridgewater State University and is pursuing a master's degree. Her husband, Brendan, and their son pinned her sergeant's badge.
