Twelve-year-old Luke Fournier was home sick from school when he heard strange noises around the house on Friday afternoon.

Peeking out the window of his home at 195 Florence Road in Waltham, he saw a man wearing gloves walking around the yard and ringing the doorbell. He heard smashing, too. Fournier hid in the bedroom, called his mom, and 9-1-1.

“While his mom was on her way home, the dispatcher kept him quiet and calm and they used a silent method to get information,” said Det. Sgt. Joseph Guigno of the Waltham Police Department. “The dispatcher would have him press 1 for yes and 2 for no and things like that. Police got to the house and made sure no one was in there.”

The alleged would-be burglar was close by, and “well known to police.”

Police chased Richard Poirier down Cedarwood to Sibley Road across Route 20 and onto Livingstone Lane. Along the way, he allegedly dumped a black backpack, which police recovered. In it was a laptop, some jewelry, an iPad and a hammer. Also discarded along the path was another laptop and GoCam. All of the items were those that had been reportedly taken during another known robbery in that area earlier that day.

Poirier, 33, 90 Galen St., Waltham, was arrested and charged with malicious destruction of property over $250, attempt to commit a crime, possession of burglarious instruments, disorderly conduct and receiving stolen property in connection with the Florence Road incident. He was also charged in connection with an earlier break-in in the area, at 130 Thornton Road, and charged with B&E in the daytime for felony, malicious destruction of property under $250 and larceny over $250.
