First Bears, Now Coyotes: Waltham Urges Caution Around Wildlife

WALTHAM, MA — Be cautious around coyotes, city officials are urging.

"With the warmer weather finally here, there has been an increase in coyote and other wildlife sightings in Waltham," a public notice said on Wednesday.

Waltham might seem an unlikely habitat for coyotes, but residents share the community with more wildlife than many people realize.

Wild animals are often seen moving through neighborhoods or along streets as they travel between wooded areas. City officials said spotting an animal during the daytime does not necessarily mean it is sick.

Bears have also been seen recently in the city of 66,000.

Waltham officials urged residents to leave wildlife alone and avoid feeding, chasing or surrounding animals, which can cause them to become habituated to people.

The city also recommends removing food sources such as bird feeders, unsecured trash and dirty grills. Pets should be kept secured, especially at night.

Anyone encountering an animal posing an immediate threat to people or acting abnormally should call 911 so officers can respond. Residents can also contact the Massachusetts Environmental Police at 800-632-8075.
