According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, ATM skimming involves the installation of a device that records bank account data when a user inserts their ATM card into the machine. Typically, a person can then encode that stolen data onto a blank card and use the money as their own.

The FBI says this happens often by a criminal installing a hidden camera onto the machine, as well as a skimmer, which looks similar to the original card reader and also fits over the top of the original one.

Cameras are used to record the cardholder typing in their pin while the skimmer is used to record the bank account information.

However, a new keypad overlay tactic has been used by some scammers in an effort to replace the camera. This overlay is placed on top of the ATM keyboard and can record the PIN number digitally.
