Bites Nearby: Antojito's Cafe
A no-frills place for authentic Central American fare, which keeps the costs down by accepting only cash.
Central American and Mexican fare has taken off in the Greater Boston area, and another entry is Antojito's Café, a modest eatery at 489 Moody St., at the corner of High Street, open since 2009. The food is authentic and inexpensive. Many offerings are just two or three dollars. They keep the costs down by accepting only cash.
What to eat: Antojito's offers classic south of the border fare including burritos, quesadillos, fajitas and tortillas. It also has a couple of variations on Central American cuisine that they claim are unique to Waltham: gorditas and pupusas. Gorditas are handmade corn pita bread filled with chicken or beef, beans, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Pupusas are a Salvadorean creation of corn tortillas filled with meat, cheese and vegetables. "We have a little bit of everything," says cook-chef Rosa Garcia.
There's also a Mexican-themed breakfast menu.
