Bites Nearby: Paisano Restaurant & Bar
An authentic and inexpensive Mexican-Guatemalan restaurant and bar.
There's a lot to like in this five-year-old eatery that sits by itself at 223 High St. on the Waltham/Newton line. The food is consistently good, with just enough seasoning and a sense that it's fresh, although a lot of it probably isn't low-fat. The bar, which takes up the back half of the establishment, has its own tables, yet it's completely separate from the restaurant booths in the front. In either half, the service is prompt and friendly, and there are a couple of muted flat screens, if you want to watch a sporting event while you eat or drink. And, finally, the prices are refreshingly reasonable, with many dishes under $10 and most non-alcoholic drinks $1.99.
What to eat: You can choose between lots of dishes on either the Mexican side of the menu -- steaks, chicken, enchiladas, quesadillas, burritos, and tacos -- or the Guatemalan half, which is a bit less familiar, featuring pork, beef, shrimp, and yucca. But, it's all savory and hearty fare from South of the Border.
The vibe: The atmosphere is casual, friendly and upbeat with regulars, including families, dropping in any time. A touch of music adds to the festive feel.

Cool factor no. 1: The patio: six tables with umbrellas. True, it's a bit near busy High Street, so you can kick back and have a lively conversation or even sing a song and no one will be offended.
Cool factor no. 2: Two people can eat well for $30.
