Bites Nearby: Sevan Bakery
This local institution on Mount Auburn Street in Watertown is more than just a bakery.
Sevan is one of three popular Middle Eastern grocery stores in a two-block stretch of Mount Auburn Street in Watertown (along with Massis and Arax). Each has its own strengths, although they all carry basics like fresh feta cheeses, yogurts and kefirs, olives, flat breads, sweet breads, hummus, tahini and other Middle Eastern staples. Sevan has perhaps the best olive bar and best selection of sweet and savory baked goods, such as pies filled with spinach, cheese, mushrooms, meats, and other foods, and flaky, crusty and nutty confections in the baklava family.
What to eat: The selection at the olive bar is one of the best around, including ones marinated in fresh garlic, lemon and parsley and spicy varieties. The fresh hummus is worth trying, and it's just slightly more expensive than the pre-packaged hummus containers in supermarket, and a lot creamier. The prepared cold dishes and salads are also a draw: tabouleh, pilaf, orzo salad, roasted eggplant, grape leaves and more.
The vibe: Lively, friendly and helpful.
