The Science of Yoga

Yoga has been documented in scientific studies to have hundreds of beneficial effects on the body and mind, from lowering cholesterol to improving the functioning of the immune system, and has been shown to be helpful for more than 50 different medical conditions. In this workshop, we’ll discuss yoga’s mechanisms of action, explore the science of neuroplasticity and look at the recent evidence of yoga’s profound ability to change gene expression. We’ll also explore what isn't known, the limitations of science in investigating yoga and other holistic healing systems, as well as how to make good health care decisions in the absence of scientific data.

Instructor: Dr. Timothy McCallTimothy McCall, MD, is a board-certified internist and a dedicated yoga practitioner who has traveled repeatedly to India and throughout the United States observing, training with, and interviewing the world’s leading yoga teachers and therapists. He is the medical editor of Yoga Journal, author of the best-selling book Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing.

Who should attend?
This workshop is the first program in the 500 hour Therapeutic Teacher Training program. It is also appropriate for yoga students of all levels, yoga teachers from any tradition, as well as health care professionals and researchers.
