The Waltham City Council will be honoring Hovey Players at the next council meeting on Monday May 9th at the Waltham City Hall. The council will be acknowledging Hovey Players' 75 years of serving Waltham and its surrounding communities.
The Council will note Hovey's current Board of Directors, its current production of "Private Lives" by Noel Coward, and its long history that started with tis first production of "Are You Intruding" in 1936 at the Hovey Memorial Building when Hovey Players was calling themselves "The Dramatists." Here they were asked by the Hovey Memorial Society to take up permanent residence at the hall. And so the Hovey Playes were born.
In 1952, the Hovey Memorial Society dissolved, and the Hovey Players would spend the next 21 years performing in local churches, schools (particularly Lexington Jr High School), the Boys and Girls Club, and in small halls throughout the area. In 1973, the Hovey Players constructed a theater in the basement of the D'Angio Building at 9 Spring Street where it currently resides.
