Burgoyne Funeral Traffic, As People Say Goodbye To Waltham Leader

Joe Burgoyne passed away last week.

WALTHAM, MA — Expect heavy traffic and detours near the intersection of Main and Linden streets as the funeral procession for Joe Burgoyne makes its way through the area, police said on Twitter around 1 p.m.

Police also recommend avoiding the Ellison Park area for the next several hours. This comes after Tuesday and Wednesday hundreds of people lined the street waiting to pay last respects to Burgoyne at the wake.

The folks at True Value by Ideal on Lexington was decked out with a tribute to the man at the location where the Burgoyne family business started in 1923. And a number of people took to social media to post condolences to Joseph Burgoyne III, a Waltham leader, businessman and philanthropist.

He was 62 when he passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 16 in Rhode Island.

Although he was born in Brighton, Joe was a lifelong resident of Waltham, according to his obituary. When he was 12, Joe started working for his family business Ideal Concrete Block, Co., Inc. founded in 1923. As a third generation owner of Ideal with his brothers, Joe continued his family’s tradition of serving the local community. In 1973 he graduated from Waltham High School and went on to Bryant & Stratton Business School.

He was described as a man with natural talent in woodworking as well as a natural way with people.

Joe’s affable personality put all at ease, according to his obit. His smile and willingness to always extend his hand, engaged many in conversation that often ended with “Let me know if there is anything I can do for you,” his obituary said.

He especially enjoyed golfing, playing bocce, family vacations, traveling with his wife and spending summers sitting on the Dion’s deck in Marshfield.

Joe belonged to a number of Waltham boards and clubs: the Waltham Community Access Cable Commission, the Waltham West Suburban Chamber of Commerce, the Waltham Boys & Girls Club, the Waltham Lions Club, the Waltham Lodge of Elks B.P.O.E. #953, the Waltham Sons of Italy Dante Algheri Lodge # 648, Our Lady’s Parish and School, North Waltham Little League, Waltham High School Gridiron and Girl’s Lacrosse Booster clubs, and was a member of Bentley University’s Parents Executive Committee.

In 2017 the Waltham Chamber of Commerce awarded him the Community Achievement Award.

Joe is survived by his wife of 40 years Patricia A. (Walsh) Burgoyne, his children Erin M. Donovan, Joseph L. Burgoyne IV, Christopher P. Burgoyne, and Molly Rose Burgoyne, along with his five grandchildren. He is survived by his five siblings and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Services were held Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street. A Mass was held at Christian Burial at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, on Trapelo Road at 11 a.m. Interment followed at Grove Hill Cemetery.
