High-End Eatery Closes After 8-Year Run In Waltham

The surf-and-turf restaurant got great reviews, but has shuttered for good.

WALTHAM, MA — While the restaurant business here appears to be booming, one eatery is a bust.

The Federal, an upscale surf-and-turf eatery at 74 Tower Road, has closed for good, according to a post Friday on the restaurant’s website.

Little reason was given for the shut-down, although the company said the “the current economy and ever-increasing costs” made it “impossible to continue.”

Attempts to reach Richard Brackett, managing partner of the restaurant, were not immediately successful.

The Federal offered a mix of seafood, meat and other menu selections, from modest starters and raw-bar items to a $60 Delmonico steak. The restaurant scored 4.2 stars on review site Yelp.

It's not clear what the future of the property might be. The space, just off Interstate 95/Route 128, is valued at $1.75 million, according to the most recent tax rolls.

The Federal opened in 2018. Brackett is also a partner in Stazione di Federal, an Italian-cuisine restaurant on Moody Street in downtown Waltham.
