James Veiking, Navy Vet, Raised in Waltham, Dies at 75

He was a member of Eastern Massachusetts Baseball Umpires Association.

Mr. James F. Veiking, of Waltham, died Thursday, August 27, 2015 at his home. He was 75.

Jim was born in Albany, New York on November 18, 1939, the son of the late Frank and Lottie (Dargavel) Veiking, and was raised in Waltham. A graduate of Waltham High School, he served with the United States Navy.

For most of his life he lived in Watertown, returning to Waltham two years ago. Until his retirement Jim worked for the Athletic Department at Boston College where he was responsible for maintaining the various athletic playing surfaces.

He was a longtime member and a past president of the Eastern Massachusetts Baseball Umpires Association where he also served on the executive board. In addition to his lifelong love for baseball he coached hockey for many years at Belmont High School and for the Boston Junior Braves.

He leaves his wife, Mary (Harwich) Russo Veiking; his children, Edward Veiking and his wife, Kerry, of Mansfield, Michael Veiking and Heather Veiking Hoffman, both of Marshfield; his step-children, David Russo and his wife, Shannon, of Framingham and Krysten Deveaux and her husband, Matthew, of Waltham; his grandchildren, JT and Kacey Veiking and Hunter and Tyler Hoffman; his step-grandchildren, Bryce Russo and Dane and Brock Deveaux and his former wife, Linda Veiking of Newton.
